Thunderkick releases futuristic retro pokie: Spectra

Spectra Pokie ReviewIn the age of multi-layered pokie games with multiple special features and complex concepts, it is always refreshing to find a simple yet immersive pokie machine with just the essential.

Thunderkick launched Spectra last January, and introduced us to a futuristic concept with a retro twist. If you're a fan of 80s' space-driven aesthetics, you will love how this pokie is presented.

Spectra is a 5×4 pokie with 30 fixed paylines. The size of your bet is shown on your selected currency, with a minimum of 0.10 and a maximum of 100.00, while theoretically highest jackpot is €/$240.000.

The graphics are very elegant and minimalistic, featuring clean lines and bright rainbow colors on a dark plain background.

The symbols used for the spins include basic geometrical figures such as squares, triangles and circles –a wink to Play Station's control buttons, maybe?– and traditional casino symbols such as bars, four leafed clovers and sevens. Of course, these symbols were rendered in a single outlined design to fit the overall theme.

As for the payouts assigned for each symbol, the geometrical ones hold the lowest value, while the bars and sevens stand out as the highest paying symbols on the pokie. These last ones are very difficult to obtain, being a lot more often to hit paylines consisting of squares and circles.

Keep in mind that despite the simplicity of this pokie, the variance is high. It takes a risk seeking spirit and a lot of luck to get substantial wins, so you might want to proceed with caution while entering the futuristic and glowing world of Spectra.

What we loved

It is clear that we loved the concept. It is both basic and elegant, and the lack of dynamic complexity is not a flaw, at least from our point of view. But there are a few more specifics that we loved about Spectra, and we will try to sum them up in the following paragraphs.

First, the fact that there is only one special feature with various ways of enhancing the gameplay caught our attention. The glowing and multicolored W is featured on the pokie's logo, and it is, as you might imagine, a Wild symbol.

As any other Wild, it substitutes for every symbol in the game, increasing your chances of hitting a winning payline. In this particular case, the Wild symbol is a Stacked Wild, appearing always on stacks of four symbols, covering up entire reels at a time.

But that is not all. The Stacked Wild feature also functions as a Scatter, since every time a Stacked Wild appears, it triggers a free re-spin. During these re-spins, the Stacked Wild will nudge itself to the center of the grid, allowing for even more favorable odds.

As you can see, the simple W symbol functions as a Wild, a Stacked Wild, a symbolic Scatter and a Nudge Wild. Thunderkick definitely put a lot of effort in assembling this kind of multiple functioning enhancement deriving from a single feature.

What we did not like

Spectra allows users to set the amount of their bet, and it also holds an Auto Play feature. However, the overall gameplay is not very customizable, so there are little to no ways of adjusting your experience according to your strategies and preferences.

Worth playing?

Spectra is a perfectly designed video-pokie with all the pros of a classic one. The elegant design and the simple yet rich gameplay are very good reasons to give this pokie a try. The only thing you need to keep in mind is how volatile this game gets, so make sure to be open to potential losses.
